November 27, 2025Foreign citizens planning to enter and stay in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan are required to take into account the current norms of migration legislation. Compliance with established procedures helps to avoid violations and ensure legal presence in the country. In accordance with the migration regime of Kazakhstan, there are three main legal grounds for stay:
- Visa-free regime
For citizens of a number of countries, including the EAEU and CIS countries, there is a visa-free entry and stay for up to 90 calendar days. This mode is used, as a rule, for tourist, private or short-term business purposes.
According to the changes that came into force on January 27, 2023, a limit of 90 days has been set for each 180-day period starting from the moment of the first entry into the country. This means that entry and exit for the purpose of “resetting the deadline” is no longer allowed.
The identity documents at the entrance are:
foreign passport (for most countries);
for citizens of the Russian Federation, it is also possible to enter using an internal passport (federal standard).
The visa-free regime does not grant the right to employment or entrepreneurial activity.
- Temporary residence Permit (RVP)
A RVP (temporary residence permit) is required for foreign citizens planning to stay in Kazakhstan for a period of more than 90 days in connection with a work, educational, family or other legally based purpose.
Main Features:
The validity period is up to 1 year with the possibility of extension.;
The registration period is usually up to 5 business days.;
A separate business PRT is required for persons planning entrepreneurial activities.
The package of documents for obtaining a PRTR includes:
foreign passport;
medical certificate in form 028/y;
a document confirming the passage of fingerprinting;
the notarized consent of the owner of the residential premises for temporary residence.
- Residence permit (residence permit)
A residence permit (residence permit) is provided to foreign citizens who intend to carry out long-term residence in the Republic of Kazakhstan. This status grants extended rights and freedoms, including:
the right to work without obtaining a permit;
the right to study in educational institutions;
participation in private and public programs;
registration of real estate, vehicles, as well as opening accounts and obtaining loans on a general basis.
The validity period of the residence permit is from 1 to 10 years, depending on the basis of the application and the category of the applicant.
